Toddler Parenting Tips

The toddler stage can feel like a battlefield. Your child is happy-go-lucky one minute and having a tantrum the next. Every parent experiences this and it can surely be stressful. Here’s what pediatricians recommend:

Let Go of Rules

During the toddler years, children are working on becoming more independent. If you lay out too many rules, it will only result in a power struggle. Give your child choices so they feel as if they are making decisions for themselves. For example, when it’s time for breakfast, provide two options. Your child can have a say in what they eat while you are still making sure there are healthy options.

Simple Meals

Put healthy food options on the table so you do not feel a need to monitor how much your child eats. This also gives the child options; they can pick and choose what they want to eat without feeling limited.

Potty Training

Potty training is not considered delayed until a child is four years old. While you may be ready to stop changing diapers, your child may not be ready to stop wearing them just yet. Clue them in on having the urge to go rather than knowing when they’ve already gone.

Acknowledge Good Behavior

Putting a child in time-out when they misbehave is a common practice among many parents, but don’t forget to praise your child when they do the right thing. Compliment them when they are being good and they will be more likely to repeat the behavior.

Stick to a Sleep Schedule

Stick with steady nap times and bedtimes. Sleep is an important part of health and development in toddlers, so set a scheduled time, give or take 30 minutes. Practice a nightly routine to start winding down, like taking a bath or reading a story.

Small Talk

Engaging in small talk is a great way to maximize your child’s speech development. Point things out as you pass by in the car or while playing with your child, such as colors, sizes, and shapes. Reading and singing songs will also teach language development and patterns.

Children’s World

At Children’s World Learning Center, we know that the early years of life matter because early experiences affect the brain. As a child’s brain grows, the quality of the experiences that a child has creates either a sturdy or fragile foundation for all of the development and behaviors that follow. Parents want to make educated choices for their families, and getting things right the first time is better than trying to fix them later. Contact us today!
