Things to Consider When Buying a Car Seat

Did you know that 3 out of 4 car seats are not used or installed properly? That is a lot of car seats! Today we are going to talk about some car seat facts and how to make sure that they are safe for our kids.

First and foremost, car seat laws vary from state to state. So, it is important to know what regulations you must meet.

North Carolina Laws for Car Seats:

  • A child less than eight years of age and less than 80 pounds in weight shall be properly secured in a weight-appropriate child passenger restraint system which meets federal standards.
  • A child less than 5 and 40 pounds must be secured in the rear seat of the vehicle unless the child restraint system is designed for use with airbags.
  • If no seating position equipped with a lap and shoulder belt to properly secure the weight-appropriate child passenger restraint system is available, a child less than eight years of age and between 40 and 80 pounds may be restrained by a properly fitted lap-only belt.

Rules to Follow When Buying a Car Seat:

  1. Your baby needs to stay in the rear facing in the back seat as long as possible, so until the age of 2. This will prevent any damage to their neck and back that could be potentially deadly.
  2. After the age of 2, your child can face forward with a car seat that has a 5-point harness. Remember that a properly fitted harness means the best protection for your child. Which is why you should never skip out on reading the car seat labels for age or height restrictions.
  3. When your child outgrows the car seat harness, it is time to move to a booster seat. The seatbelt should not be at their neck but at their shoulder.
  4. Always register your new car seat! This will allow the company to contact you in case there is a recall on any of their products. You can do this by filling out the registration card that came with your car seat or online with your car manufacturer.

A handy rule to follow when installing a car seat is the one-inch rule. This means that if the car seat moves an inch, in any direction after being installed – the car seat needs to be tightened again. Watch this video to get a visual of what that means. And if you are curious to know if a car seat you own has been recalled, click here to see all brands and products that have been recalled in the past 10 years.

We hope that this information helped and that it will inspire our parents to look at their car seats to make sure everything is safe and up to date. It might be tedious work, but when car seats are correctly used they reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent!
